How to Start a Skincare Routine That You Will Stick To

 |

While putting together a skincare routine that you will actually stick to seems like it would be pretty simple, it can actually feel quite overwhelming. Those new, and even some veterans, to the skincare world, have been there. While there are some aspects of skincare that may seem like a mystery to you, having a dedicated proper routine can help you to maintain healthy glowing skin.

Follow our guide on how to start a skincare routine and tips on how to commit to your new routine.

How to Start a Skincare Routine?

Check out our 3 simple guidelines to help you design a skincare routine that you will stick to.

Keep it Simple

Keeping your routine simple is especially important if you are just starting out. Remember, you can always build onto your routine. What you start with does not have to be set in stone. Take into account what your skin profile is like and let that guide your decisions.  Sites like theskinspot.com also have features like a Skin Quiz or virtual access to an aesthetician.

Dr. Sheila Nazarian, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, states, “While coming right out of the gate and committing to a full system routine with too many steps to count can seem like the right thing to do, it can actually cause you to feel intimidated and ditch the routine altogether.” Keeping it simple, such as following the GRASS system is a great place to start.  GRASS stands for growth factor, retinol, antioxidant, sunscreen, and a specialty product.

Maximize Your Night Time Routine

Remember those nights when you were just too tired to wash your face? Make it a priority to change your ways. Allowing this buildup of sunscreen, makeup, dirt and oil to sit on your face overnight can clog up your pores and even speed up skin damage. Preventing damage to your skin is always easier and more effective than trying to reverse that damage later on. While you sleep, your skin cells are in a state of regeneration.

Dr. Nazarian explains, “Skin cells need nutrients the most while we sleep”. It is important to remove makeup and build up from the skin before you go to bed. This can be done by utilizing a face cleanser consisting of cleansing oil or micellar water. Some individuals also opt to take their morning cleanser and do a second cleanse before bed. But, don’t forget to moisturize as cleansing and retinol use can be drying.

Remind Yourself

Let’s face it, sticking to a routine for anything can be challenging. Remembering what you are planning on doing for your routine can sometimes feel overwhelming. Having a simple reminder can help you stay on track. You may choose to place a sticky note on your end table, reminding you to wash your face before bed. Another trick is to laminate a sheet of paper, which will help to keep it from getting dirty and place it in your skincare drawer or up on your bathroom mirror.

Sticking to Your Routine

Sticking to a routine is not an easy feat, especially when it comes to skincare. However, it is vital that we take care of our skin to help keep it protected from damage. Without a proper routine, our skin will begin to suffer. Maintaining a proper skincare routine can ensure that we are doing our best to ward off damage and signs of aging to keep our skin youthful and glowing. What you do at home is like brushing your teeth.  What you do in the office with your doctor is like getting a proper cleaning. Both are important to optimize skin (and dental) health!
